With Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial missing due to injury, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a huge selection problem ahead of Leicester City's visit to Old Trafford on Saturday. The Norwegian was also missing Luke Shaw, who was out with an hamstring injury. To make matters worse, Aaron Wan-Bissaka was also in a race against time to be fit for the tie. The real problem was the absence of able replacements in the squad.
United were already short of strikers after the departure of both Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in the summer. Fred had yet to kick a ball in the new season, so the Norwegian struggled to put together a first eleven competitive enough to secure all three points against Leicester City. Thankfully, Wan-Bissaka recovered in time to be available for selection.
Manchester United Starting XI: David De Gea; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Ashley Young (c); Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay, Juan Mata; Daniel James, Marcus Rashford, Andreas Pereira.
United continued their habit of starting the game well and even went ahead when Marcus Rashford scored from the spot in the 8th minute. From there on, it was a cagey affair, as neither side could convert their chances, with Leicester City looking threatening with every passing minute. The game went into half time with the score 1-0 in United's favour.
After the break Leicester City piled on the pressure, but United stayed compact at the back and sealed a hard fought win. Here are the player ratings from the game.
Player Ratings:
1 David de Gea - 8
Made a brilliant save right at the start, keeping United in the game. He was called into action again from a good Chilwell hit, and once again David de Gea kept Leicester City out. The Spaniard had a decent outing and also looked comfortable with the ball at his feet. Earned a deserved clean sheet.
29 Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 7
The Englishman started the game very well, and regularly ventured forward to give the away defense a lot of problem. Wan-Bissaka was so good against Maddison that the Leicester City player had to switch positions to affect the play. Stayed stellar at the back, but lost his influence in attack as the game went on. However, he ended the game strong.
3 Victor Lindelof - 6
The Swede still looks a liability in the backline. He gifted Maddison a wonderful chance early in the game and needed De Gea to be impeccable between the sticks. Lindelof was initially uncomfortable with high balls, but recovered his confidence in the second half. Made a few vital tackles at the end of the game to keep United's lead intact.
5 Harry Maguire - 7
The Englishman was largely untroubled in the game and dealt with the threat of Vardy very well. His presence at the back was crucial when United defended set pieces and Maguire also ventured forward with the ball on quite a few occasions. Stepped up well from the defense to thwart the opposition counters.
18 Ashley Young - 6
The Englishman had a decent outing and was strong at the back and adventurous while going forward. Combined well with Daniel James at times, but did not cause too much trouble to the opposition in attack.
39 Scott McTominay - 8
The Scottish midfielder brought the steel to the midfield and dominated the opposition midfielders. Ben Chilwell and James Maddison were provided special treatment as McTominay bulldozed through the home side at times. Was decent with his passing and provided very good protection to his back line.
31 Nemanja Matic - 6
The Serbian only made it to the team because Pogba was injured and Fred was not a 100% fit. He did little to warrant a permanent place in the near future. Was decent with his passing and did make a few useful interventions. Lack of pace made him a liability, but he helped United stay compact under intense Leicester City pressure. Eventually replaced by Fred.
8 Juan Mata - 7
The Spaniard was quite useful at the start of both halves. Mata picked up cute spaces in the hole behind the striker and dictated play quite well. The absence of a deep lying playmaker crippled his overall play. Mata was decent with his passing and movement off the ball.
21 Daniel James - 6
It was his poorest outing in a United shirt, but Daniel James was heavily marked from start till he was substituted. Did have a few chances to break through, but seemed a little off the pace. Faded out of the tie as the game progressed.
10 Marcus Rashford - 8
His movement and tenacity looked a threat right from the start. Won the penalty and scored brilliantly under pressure. Kept the Leicester City defense on their toes and even hit the upright with a ferocious free kick. Took on the opposition defense at will, but lacked support from his fellow forward players.
15 Andreas Pereira - 7
Started out as the right forward and caught the eye with his tenacity and pressing off the ball. Combined well with Wan-Bissaka and tracked back judiciously. Had a few decent chances to score and showed his abilities through the middle after Juan Mata's departure.
17 Fred - 6
Came on for Matic. Kept the ball ticking and helped United regain the tempo of the game. Should start ahead of Matic in the team.
44 Tahith Chong -6
Was a breath of fresh air off the bench. Took on the opposition players and gave United an edge in attack. Combined very well with Rashford and Pereira.
38 Axel Tuanzebe - NA
Came on for the last couple of minutes to help see out the win.
