Harry Maguire appointed as the new Red Devils skipper | Manchester United News

Harry Maguire has been handed over the armband after Young's departure

Harry Maguire has been appointed as the new Manchester United captain after the departure of Ashley Young, the Telegraph confirms. Young is in Milan ahead of his medical before a move to Inter Milan and his departure forced United to appoint a new club captain for the rest of the season.

Incidentally, the Englishman had taken over from Antonio Valencia as the Manchester United skipper at the start of this season.

Young’s ongoing negotiation with the Nerazzurri had been the talk of the town for the past week and now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shed light on United’s counteroffer for the Englishman. The Norwegian confirms that Young had a 2-year contract offer from Inter Milan, but Manchester United were reluctant to offer him similar terms in the contract extension.

“To be fair, I think for Ashley, he's 35 in the summer and if he gets a two-year contract somewhere I think it's up to him to take that.
We weren’t ready to offer that, he's been a good servant for the club, he’s been captain, won trophies, league cups.”

The Manchester United manager also confirmed that he was ready to usher in the new generation, which was one of the factors that influenced Young’s decision.

“But we’ve got players coming through so when Ashley's head and mindset was on, ‘Yeah I want to try this’, so why not do it now.”

Young’s departure meant that Solskjaer had to pass on the armband to another player for the rest of the season. Maguire had been wearing the armband in the absence of Young and Solskjaer feels that the former Leicester City player had earned the right to be Young’s successor for the rest of the season.

“Harry has been wearing the captain’s armband and he will keep wearing it, he’s come in and he's been a leader in the group.”

The Norwegian also revealed that he has been impressed by the Englishman’s leadership qualities, which is the reason why he has been trusted with wearing the armband in the wake of Young’s departure.

“I’ve not been surprised but I’ve been impressed by his leadership skills, so Harry will continue wearing the armband.”
“He's come in and everything about him tells me he's a leader, he's part of a group we've had that have been leading this young group - Ashley, Marcus [Rashford], David [De Gea], Harry, so Harry will keep on wearing the armband.”

Incidentally, Maguire is the quickest Manchester United player to be handed the armband since the Second World War; he only joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2019.
