Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might be tempted to start Marcus Rashford from the bench against Wolves
Manchester
United welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to Old Trafford on Wednesday for the
third-round replay in the FA Cup. The two sides locked horns earlier this month
at the Molineux in a tie that ended in a 0-0 draw and it added another game to
United’s already congested fixture in January.
Given the
injury concerns at Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be sweating to put
his best team out on the field for the game. However, the Norwegian is aware
that United need a vast improvement from their disappointing performance at the
Molineux in the first week of January.
Last
season, the Red Devils were knocked out of the tournament by the Wolves, who
reached the semi-final of the FA Cup where they were defeated by Watford. Solskjaer
will be looking for payback, but Wolves have been sort of a jinx for the
Norwegian, who is yet to register a win against the Black Country side.
Both teams
come into the game on a contrasting run of form. Manchester United are
inconsistent as ever but gave a stellar display of their abilities against
Norwich on Saturday. Wolves, on the other hand, are without a win in their last
4 games in all competitions and could only manage a draw against Newcastle
United over the weekend. However, their last win was a hard-fought 3-2 victory
over Manchester City at the Molineux.
Interestingly,
if the game stays 0-0 after 90 minutes, we will be heading into extra time. If
there’s nothing to separate the two teams after another 30 minutes, the game
will go into penalties.
In this
segment, we bring you all the essential information ahead of Manchester
United’s FA Cup replay against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manchester United have the edge over Wolves at Old Trafford
The two
sides have met 16 times in total over the years and Manchester United have an
upper edge on their opponents. United have 9 wins compared to Wolves’ 4, while
there have only been 3 draws between the two sides. Wolves are unbeaten against
the Red Devils in their last 5 games in all competitions and have won 2 of
those last 5 games.
However,
Solskjaer will be buoyed with the Wolves’ dismal record at Old Trafford; they
are without a win away to Manchester United for 40 years. During that time,
they have endured 8 defeats and 2 draws.

Paul Pogba is a long term absentee
Manchester
United will be without quite a few players for the game against Wolves. Scott
McTominay, Paul Pogba, Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe are all unavailable for
the game due to injuries. In addition, Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah have
just returned from their respective timeouts and neither will be fit for the
game.
On
Saturday, Solskjaer took off Rashford early in the second half as a precaution
and the striker remains a doubt for the game, especially with the crucial trip
to Anfield up ahead next Sunday. Jesse Lingard and Luke Shaw’s involvement also
remains under doubt, while Ashley Young might not feature yet again.
SOlskjaer
will certainly have next weekend’s game in the back of his mind while selecting
his team. As such, he could opt for quite a few changes to his team, in order
to keep his best eleven fit for the game against Liverpool on Sunday.
For the
away side, Willy Boly and Bruno Jordao are expected to miss out due to
injuries. Diogo Jotta is also a doubt for the game.

United have the edge over Wolves at the moment
Manchester
United displayed a rhythm and swagger against Norwich that was a welcome change
from their recent disappointing performances on the pitch. The fact that United
pumped 4 goals against a hapless Norwich defense which struggled to deal with
the speed of the United attack should give Solskjaer a lot of confidence.
Of course,
confidence is the one factor that Nuno EspĂrito Santo’s wards have been
missing in recent games. Even though Solskjaer is expected to ring in the
changes in his team, United should still be too strong for a Wolves side who
are beginning to show some cracks.
Match Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
