Manchester United News: The Red Devils will not travel to Qatar for warm-weather training during Premier League winter break

Manchester United trained in Dubai last season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has canceled Manchester United’s trip to Qatar during the inaugural Premier League winter break, amid security fears over unrest in the middle-east, the Telegraph reports. The Norwegian previously had plans to take his entire squad to Qatar during the 16-day break for warm-weather training. However, he is now ready to revert to a different destination which is expected to be closer to home.

Manchester United have preferred to indulge in warm weather training during the winter in recent seasons, in a bid to escape the cold rush of Europe. They have trained at Dubai’s Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex in recent seasons and had been there last year as well.

That training appeared fruitful as United looked sharper and fitter after returning back to the Premier League. This time, though, they might have to make do with a location in Europe.

During his time as the manager of Molde, the Norwegian has preferred to take his team to Spain for a welcome change from the cold. Molde played friendly matches in warm-weather in Spain and that might be an option for the Red Devils too. Solskjaer has confirmed that United will not travel to Qatar during the winter break, saying:

“If there is one thing that worries me it’s not on the football pitch, there are other things that will worry me more than football. We were looking at the Middle East but that is definitely not going to happen.”

The Norwegian might give his players a few days rest away from football, before taking the squad for a change of weather around Europe. He reiterated the importance of the winter break, stating that it was necessary to get some sun during that time and prepare for the end of the season.

“This mid-season break will be very important for everyone. We have five or six games until then and we are just going to stick at it and hang in there. And then get some Vitamin D and get ready for the last three months.”

United face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the F. A. Cup replay at Old Trafford on Wednesday next, before they travel to Anfield to face an unbeaten Liverpool side on Sunday.
